faq

Do you have any questions?

AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) refers to technology that helps people communicate when speech is difficult or not possible. This includes speech-generating devices that can speak messages aloud. AAC can benefit people of all ages who have difficulty speaking, whether temporary or permanent, including those with autism, cerebral palsy, ALS, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and other conditions affecting speech or language.

No - research consistently shows that AAC actually supports speech development. Using AAC can reduce frustration, increase communication attempts, and provide a model for spoken language. Many AAC users develop more speech after starting to use their devices. Think of AAC like a ramp - it provides access to communication while supporting overall language development.

No! Adults of any age can successfully learn to use AAC. Whether someone has had a recent change in their communication abilities or has been struggling to communicate for years, AAC can provide new opportunities for expression. Success with AAC depends more on having the right support system and appropriate device than on age.

AAC can be introduced at any age, even as young as toddlerhood. Early access to AAC supports language development and provides crucial communication opportunities during important developmental periods. There's no minimum age requirement - if someone could benefit from AAC, they're old enough to start.

While communication apps exist for tablets and phones, dedicated AAC devices offer important advantages: they're more durable, have louder speakers, better warranties, are often covered by insurance, and are designed specifically for communication. They also come with specialized support and training. However, we can discuss all options during an evaluation to find the best fit.

Learning AAC is a gradual process that varies for each person. Many people can begin using basic functions within a few sessions, while becoming proficient may take several months of practice. Remember that even speaking children take time to develop language - AAC users deserve the same patience and opportunity to grow their skills.

Many insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, cover AAC devices when medically necessary. Coverage varies by plan and requires proper documentation from evaluation. Our team can help guide you through the funding process and explore alternative funding options if needed.

Modern AAC devices are designed to withstand daily use and come with protective cases. They're water-resistant, can survive typical drops, and have warranties covering most damage. While no technology is indestructible, these devices are specifically built to be reliable tools for daily communication.

Yes! AAC devices are portable and designed for use anywhere communication happens. They have good battery life, adjustable volume, and screen visibility for different lighting conditions. Many are weather-resistant and come with carrying cases. We help create implementation plans for all important environments in someone's life.

We provide comprehensive training for families, caregivers, and other communication partners. This includes hands-on device training, strategies for encouraging communication, and ongoing support as needs change. Success with AAC relies on knowledgeable, confident communication partners.

The first step is contacting our office to schedule an initial consultation. We'll gather information about communication needs and goals, explain our evaluation process, and discuss insurance coverage. From there, we can schedule a comprehensive evaluation to determine the most appropriate AAC solution.
